J. Gary May, M.D. – Private Practice - Child, Adolescent & Adult Psychiatry
Since receiving his MD in 1961, Dr. May has dedicated his career as a psychiatrist to the treatment of mental illness. He is one of the five original members of the committee that developed the Mental Health Center of Denver in 1989. He has served twice as president of the board and continues on the board as an emeritus member. He has served on numerous committees, task forces, and boards to increase the awareness of and need for treatment for those with chronic mental illness.
Over the past 30 years, May has provided his expertise to an impressive list of campaigns, organizations, corporations and programs. The list of his roles includes
- Coordinator of the national media campaign for the Ad Council New York for the National Committee for the Prevention of Child Abuse,
- Chief Deputy Director of the California Department of Mental Health,
- Deputy Director of Mental Health of Kentucky, and
- Psychiatric Consultant to the Consumer Affairs Division of General Mills, Inc.
Additionally, he was president of the Colorado Psychiatric Society, director of Adolescent Programs for Mount Airy Psychiatric Hospital, and has been on the faculties of the University of Colorado, the University of Louisville, and the University of Kentucky Medical Schools. He was also the director of Southwest Denver Mental Health Center .
Dr. May has published articles on psychiatry and mental illness and has presented on these same topics to students, medical residents, and colleagues throughout the country. May has been a member of the American Psychiatric Association and a member of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry since 1969 and has been a member of the Colorado Psychiatric Society since 1973.
May has six children (as he says, “a child Psychiatrist has to believe in his product”). He writes unpublished fiction and is a woodworker and wood turner. He received a BA in political science and economics from the University of Colorado and an MD from the University of Colorado School of Medicine.
