Seven Presentations from Mental Health Center of Denver Scheduled at National Conference
MHCD’s Department of Evaluation and Research, under the leadership of Dr. Antonio Olmos (pictured right), has developed seven presentations which have been accepted for the American Evaluation Association National Conference in November 2008. Among these are:
- The Meaning of “Getting Better” in Youth Mental Health: A Photovoice Study; Christina Jason, Kathryn DeRoche, Sarah Shaw
This study evaluates the process of “getting better” through the use of the photovoice techniques. Five youth participants are interviewed regarding pictures taken by the youth depicting things that made them feel better. These interviews are integrated with other research and theory to identify the relationships between recovery, resiliency, and systems of care in youth mental health services. The results support the use of photovoice as a community-based participatory research technique. It empowers youth and incorporates their viewpoints into ongoing research.
- The Unexpected Benefits of a Consumer Survey Team: Factors Relating to Motivation for Employment; Derek Anderson, Kathryn DeRoche
At the Mental Health Center of Denver, we have embraced the use of a “consumer survey team” to administer surveys to other consumers (peer-to-peer data collection), and have noticed an unexpected benefit that members commonly find employment after involvement with the team. The primary goal of the evaluation was to examine attitudes towards employment of consumer survey team members and to determine if involvement with the team is a model of employment training for individuals struggling with mental health problems.
The Mental Health Center of Denver is a leader in recovery-oriented mental health treatment. Evaluation Specialist Kathryn DeRoche and Roy Starks, Program Director of the 2Succeed programs, have important roles in this work.
