The Mental Health Center of Denver wins Corporate Express EcoOffice Makeover Contest
Grand Prize helps MHCD reduce its impact on the planet.
Denver , Colorado January 24, 2008 . The Mental Health Center of Denver (MHCD) won the $20,000 Grand Prize in Corporate Express' EcoOffice Makeover promotion for a greener workplace.
The grand prize - an estimated value of $20,000 in green office products and earth-friendly cleaning supplies and on-site consultation with sustainability experts – will be awarded by Corporate Express to The Mental Health Center of Denver staff on Thursday, January 31 st from 10:30 am until noon. Green products will be delivered and sustainability experts will be on hand for the ceremony.
Grand prize went to the Metro-Denver area company describing in 600-words or less what their company was doing to become greener and why being green in the workplace is important. The MHCD Together Green Team submitted the winning essay.
“We're honored to be chosen , says Dr. Carl Clark, CEO of MHCD. “Not only does this enhance our wildly successful internal green initiative, it helps us be better stewards of our limited resources and the environment and sets an example for the people we serve. Our staff has enthusiastically embraced promoting environmentally-friendly practices and creating the healthiest and greenest workplace possible.”
The 20-member Together Green Team is made up of four committees that address internal green initiatives: transportation, recycling, workplace, and technology. Committees meet monthly to review data and progress, set priorities and formulate green action plans.
A sample of greening efforts at MHCD include:
- Recycling confidential white paper that saved 88 trees in 2007; recycling glass, mercury and metal used in light bulbs and fluorescent lights; and recycling cardboard for the past 10 years.
- Starting in February, paper recycling containers will be at each workplace; and over the next six months every MHCD site will recycle glass, aluminum, and newspaper with a goal of cutting trash in half and increasing recycling.
- Every employee received a hot/cold environmentally safe plastic mug to discourage use of throw away cups.
- Holding monthly challenges – low print month, recycle month, alternative transportation month, Arbor Day (plant a tree) month – and tracking the impact of each challenge.
