Dr. Carl Clark Awarded Prestigious Livingston Fellowship

Bonfils-Stanton Foundation announces 2008 Fellows; Clark one of five chosen for advanced leadership program

(Denver, Colo. – May 2, 2008)  On Friday, May 2, the Bonfils-Stanton Foundation named Dr. Carl Clark, CEO of the Mental Health Center of Denver (MHCD), as one of five 2008 Livingston Fellows.  This program, created by the Foundation in 2005, intends to strengthen the state’s nonprofit sector by investing in the advanced learning and development of promising nonprofit leaders.

As a Livingston Fellow, Dr. Clark will be awarded up to $25,000 to undertake activities that will enhance his leadership abilities and enable him to explore new ways to increase his impact within the Mental Health Center of Denver and to strengthen the comprehensive, community-based programs and services MHCD provides to people with serious mental illness. Since 2005, the Bonfils-Stanton Foundation has funded 20 nonprofit executive fellowships.

In presenting the award, J. Landis Martin, Chairman of the Foundation, noted, “The Foundation recognizes the significant impact nonprofit organizations make on our community and our state.  Our investment in high-potential leaders through the Livingston Fellowship Program is building a network of people finding fresh solutions and proving themselves as innovators and change agents.”

Dr. Clark intends to improve his ability to implement processes that will increase the effectiveness and impact of MHCD while gaining a better understanding of trends at the state, national and global levels.  He plans to complete an executive education program, spend time with experts focused on healthcare social policy issues, and study best practices from other mental health systems through the Fellowship.

Candidates for Livingston Fellowships are nominated by a panel of Colorado community leaders, interviewed by an independent consultant, and reviewed and approved by the Foundation’s Board of Trustees. The selection is based on exceptional leadership qualities, potential for significant contribution to the nonprofit sector, and the ability to be a role model for other Colorado nonprofit leaders.

Other 2008 Livingston Fellows include Tamara Door, President and CEO of the Downtown Denver Partnership; Adam Lerner, Executive Director of The Laboratory of Art and Ideas at Belmar; Christy Whitney, President and CEO of the Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Colorado; and Jesse Wolff, President and CEO Kempe Foundation.

The Livingston Fellowship program honors Johnston R. Livingston, a long-time Trustee and Chairman Emeritus of the Board of the Bonfils-Stanton Foundation.  In addition to his achievements as a business leader and entrepreneur, Livingston has been a volunteer and board leader for numerous nonprofit organizations.
