MHCD Receives Grant to Restore Historical Site
MHCD has been awarded a grant from the State Historical Fund of the Colorado Historical Society to restore the landmark residence at 1455 Beeler Street, Aurora. The City of Aurora Historic Site and Preservation Office partnered with MHCD in applying for this funding of $82,000 which will be used to restore the roof and front porch to the original appearance and to develop a restoration plan.
The Beeler Street Residence was constructed in September, 1925 for the family of Thomas F. Gilligan, president of the Aurora First National Bank and the Aurora Chamber of Commerce. The home, designed to promote the city of Aurora as Denver’s finest suburb, was a landmark from the beginning. According to reports in the Adams County News of that year, it was built in cooperation with Westinghouse and General Electric as a showpiece “Electrical Home” complete with “all known electrical appliances.” When it opened, the Gilligan House hosted over 15,000 visitors during a 10-day open house in 1925, which was attended by Colorado Governor Clarence J. Morley, Aurora’s mayor and other dignitaries.
Beeler has been an MHCD residential treatment facility for approximately 20 years. The staff at Beeler works with men and women experiencing co-occurring mental health and substance abuse disorders.
