As CEO Dr. Carl Clark explains, “When MHCD committed to moving from an illness-management perspective to a recovery focus, it meant we needed to increase the number of people we were serving. Over the past five years, we doubled the number served but have not doubled the space available for outpatient services. That is why purchase of a new property became so important.”
Led by CFO Forrest Cason, board and staff leadership worked for many months to determine the best solution to our space problem. MHCD contracted with City Projects, a company whose motto is “Social Change through Real Estate”, to help us conduct a space study. Based on the study findings, we determined that the most efficient and effective plan would be to consolidate four of our adult clinics. We then began researching potential sites. When we found the property formerly known as the North Pavilion at 4455 E. 12th Ave., we knew we had found the right home for our adult recovery services. City Projects will remain our representative throughout the construction phase of the building.
Because MHCD is very strong operationally, we were able to purchase the property at the end of 2010 and move forward with planning for its complete renovation to make it a welcoming space for those we serve and for our exceptional staff members. A project design team has been meeting to guide the design and remodeling process. Davis Partnership has been selected at the project architect to design the remodeled space to make it into a landmark recovery facility that is also green and sustainable.
Taylor Kohrs was selected as the General Contractor and has been working on the demolition of the interior of the building so that construction can begin early Fall 2011.
As with any major project like this, there are milestones along the way:
| November 30 | Demolition of the 1930-50's building will occur |
| Week of November 28 | Parking garage construction is anticipated pending permit approval Note: There will be more activity at 4455 E. 12th Avenue with additional trucks and evacuation equipment.
